Edson Raúl Puch Cortés (born 9 April 1986), commonly known as Edson Puch, is an Chilean footballer who currently plays for UAE Pro-League side Al-Wasl as an Attacking Midfielder.

Club career

Born in Iquique, he started his professional career at his favorite team Municipal Iquique youth ranks, however in 2003, Puch moved to Huachipato lower divisions. In 2005, he was promoted to the first team of the club, playing 9 games in that year. In the next season Puch was nominated in the Copa Sudamericana 2006 squad of Huachipato.

Deportes Iquique

After of two seasons in Huachipato, he return to Deportes Iquique in January 2007, now as professional, when the club was in the Primera B, the second tier of the Chilean football. In 2008, he helped to the team in the promotion to the Chilean Primera Division.

In 2009, with the arrival of the paraguayan striker Cristian Bogado and the experienced player Fernando Martel, he made a offensive trio with the players and they realized a notable performance. He made his Primera Division debut against Everton. The first goal of Puch in Primera División was against Ñublense in a 2–1 defeat. On 2 May, he scored a hat-trick in a 5–2 victory against Cobresal at Estadio El Cobre. His good performances in The Celestial Dragons made that San Lorenzo de Almagro and several clubs of Europe were interested on him, however he was called up by Marcelo Bielsa for play with Chile the Kirin Cup in Japan. He finish as one of goalscorers of the team with 6 goals.

Universidad de Chile

Puch moved to Universidad de Chile on 1 July 2009, costing the club $850.000 and signing a four-year contract.[1] In his presentation at the university club during a press conference, he affirmed that: "I'm very happy. The dream of any player is reach to a champion team, althoug also this have pression".

He marked his Universidad de Chile début with an assist to a Ángel Rojas goal away at Coquimbo, in the 3–1 club's win to Universidad de Concepción for the Copa Sudamericana playoffs. Puch's first goal for the club came in the 2–1 win home to Unión Española in the Torneo Apertura regular fase on 1 August 2009.

His first official goal in the season 2010 was against Huachipato in a 3–0 win at the 60th minute, after of avoid to several players of the steeler club and a masterly definition over the keeper Cristián Muñoz. Puch's first international goal on 9 March, during the universitary derby against Universidad Católica, scoring the equalizer goal in a 2–2 draw at the 92nd minute, after an impressive header, despite of his short height. After of this goal, he was named the man of the match.

Al-Wasl

On 14 May 2011, it was reported that Puch will join the Emirati club Al-Wasl, in where by managed by the former coach of Argentina Diego Maradona, terminated the Chile league tournament, in June of this year, before the 2011 Copa América,[2] and for this event, the universitary club began to look a player in his replacement.[3]

International career

Because his notable performance in Municipal Iquique during the Torneo de Apertura 2009, during May the coach Marcelo Bielsa called up to Puch for play the Kirin Cup 2009 with Chile. He debuted for the national team in a 4–0 defeat against Japan as a 46th minute substitute for Jorge Valdivia. After of his participation in the Kirin Cup, he was nominated for play against Slovakia on 17 November 2009.

On 20 January 2010, he once was nominated for the national team for play a friendly match against Panama, he started the match as titular for after be replaced in the 82nd minute by Eduardo Vargas. Puch played the full 90 minutes in the last match of Marcelo Bielsa in Chile against United States on 22 January 2011.

Personal life

Born in Iquique, Puch considers himself fan of the local professional team Deportes Iquique since a boy. He also with his friends group has a musical band called Comando, he has dedicated songs to his natal city Iquique and also to his favorite team. He released singles as "Yo soy de barrio", "Pasión de Multitudes", "Comando y Neo" and "Tu barra no te falla".
